Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) was a Si-O-Si askeleton structure of inorganic/organic hybrid molecular. It showed more excellent performance than traditional materials in heat resistance, flame retardant properties and mechanical properties. Composite materials would improve the performance if POSS can disperse to molecules level and strong interaction existed between molecules of the composite materials, so POSS would have more potential and application in the field of polymer composite materials.In this paper, EP-POSS was synthesized by hydrolytic condensation reaction, and synthesis conditions were optimized. Then, octa(γ-glycidyloxypropyl)-octasilsesquioxane (EP-POSS) acrylate was synthesized by acrylate acid and EP-POSS. In addition, preparation of UV curable coatings by octa(γ-glycidyl-oxypropyl) octasilsesquioxane acrylate and methyl methacrylate. This thesis achieved some results as follows:1. Octa(γ-glycidyloxypropyl)octasilsesquioxane(EP-POSS) was prepared by hydrolytic condensation from y-glycidyloxy propyl trimethoxy silane(KH560) in mixture solvent of isopropyl alcohol and xylene. The paper optimized the reaction conditions and the product was characterized by FTIR and1H-NMR. The thermal property of EP-POSS was studied. The result indicated that the optimum conditions were (CH3)2CHOH:C6H4(CH3)2=2:1,7h,80℃and60min, and the yield were97.62%.2. The octa(y-glycidyloxypropyl)octasilsesquioxane (EP-POSS) acrylate was synthesized by acrylate acid and the oxirane group of EP-POSS with N, N-dimethyl-benzenamine, N, N-dimethyl-benzylamine and triethylamine as catalysts separately and2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol as inhibitor. The product was confirmed by FTIR. Factors influencing the yield were explored by the orthogonally arranged experiments. The optimum conditions were found as follows:1.4%catalyst(mass ratio),0.2%inhibitor, reaction temperature110℃, and xylene as solvent. Under the above conditions, the yield of octa-(γ-glycidyloxypropyl) octasilsesquioxane acrylate could reach up to98.80%.3. UV curable coatings were prepared via mixture of EA-POSS and MMA. Some parameters of cured films such as adhesion, flexibility, hardness, water resisting property acid resistance and alkali resistance were all studied and analyzed in this paper. The results showed the performance had improved after adding moderate EA-POSS. The properties of EA-POSS/MMA were characterized by TGA, with the increase of EA-POSS content, the residual amount and thermal stability of curing films improved.
