Metaloquinolates have been a family of important luminescence material. Herein, polymers containing metaloquinolates enjoyed the advantages of both good luminous performance and film forming ability, which provide a route towards the advanced luminescent materials. Two methods, post-polymerization modification and monomer polymerization, were used to prepare metaloquinolate-containing polystyrene in this research. Their chemical structure and luminescent properties were studied.First, monomer bearing an actived ester group was copolymerized with styrene to prepare the active precursor polymer. Quinolate unit was introduced by reaction between the active precursor polymer and5-aminomethyl-8-hydroxyquinoline under a mild condition. Afterwards, a series of functional metaloquinolate-containing polystyrene had been obtained by utilizing the above polymer to coordinate to metal ion.Second, olefin monomer with mixed ligand metaloquinolate was copolymerized with styrene to obtain functional metaloquinolate-containing polystyrene. The chemical structure of the monomers and polymers were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The thermal performance of the polymers were studied by thermogravimetry analysis and differential scanning calorimeter. The experimental results indicated:(1) Both of the two methods would be used to prepare metaloquinolate-containing polystyrene. The molecule weight of the material synthesized by post-modification were higher than that of monomer polymerization.(2) All polymers have excellent thermal stability and satisfactory solubility in dichloromethane, tetrahydrofuran and other common organic solvent.(3) Strong fluorescent emission between500nm and600nm were observed for all metaloquinolate-containing polystyrenes when they were irradiated with ultraviolet rays.
