Driven by both globe climate change and human activities, Poyang Lake hasfaced wetland degradation, declining water quality, fisheries failure, and many otherecological problems, affecting the regional economic growth and ecosystem functionsseriously. However, due to the poorly understood about spatial variability of PoyangLake wetland ecosystem function, no scientific and effective measures were taken toprotect and manage Poyang Lake wetland. Therefore, it`s very important to identifythe Poyang Lake wetland ecosystem characteristics and function status by dividingPoyang Lake wetland into different function importance regions.In this study, expert judgment and the "bottom up" hierarchical clusteringmethod were taken to establish evaluation index system and the function importancezoning of Poyang Lake wetland ecosystem. The main findings are as follows:First, the ecosystem spatial distribution of Poyang Lake wetland were analysisthrough the thematic maps of each index, the result shows the significant spatialdifferentiation of main ecological characteristics:1) vegetation of Poyang Lakewetland are mainly distribute in the dish-lakes of two National Nature Reserve andRiver-connected areas with higher elevation;2) Birds of Poyang Lake wetland aremainly distribute in the dish-lakes of two National Nature Reserve and ControlledLake Branches like ZhuHu;3) Aquatic organisms were located in the middle ofseveral major rivers of Poyang Lake and the surrounding regions with deeper water.Second, the evaluation for the four ecosystem functions of Poyang Lake wetlandand produce thematic maps were done using ArcGIS, the result shows:1).The mostimportant area of biodiversity conservation function accounted for11.57%of totalarea, mainly distributed in two national nature reserve, and some place within the bay;2). The most important area of Water conservation function is accounts for6.66%ofthe total area, mainly distributed in the northwest and northeast of the study area;3).The most important area of Supply function account for2.52%of the total area of thestudy area, mainly distributed in the surrounding areas of Hukou county, Xingzi county and Duchang county.4). The most important area of Culture function accountsfor3.14%of the total area, mainly distributed in the dish-lakes of Poyang lakenational nature reserve and Nanji mountain national nature reserve, and in theDonghu lake and Zhuhu lake, etc.Third, by using landscape and grid as processing units, the paper studyedPoyang Lake wetland ecological assessment of functional importance for Biodiversityconservation Water conservation, Supply function and Culture functions. EventuallyPoyang Lake wetland was divided into Extremely important and Highly importantarea, an Important area, More important areas and Generally important area as fivelevels of ecological zones and41sub-regions.1) The extremely important areamainly located in Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve, Nanji Mountain NationalNature Reserve and the Poyang Lake National Wetland Park, the dominant ecologicalfunction mainly to be the biodiversity protection function;2) The highly importantarea is mainly distributed in Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve area, and bothsides of the bottomland Kangshan and Hanchi river, Zhuhu Lake and Shuhu Lake,the dominant ecological functions including biodiversity conservation, waterconservation, supply and cultural functions.
