In1993, Sessoli found that [Mn12O12(O2CMe)16(H2O)4]·2CH3COOH·4H2O hassuper-paramagnetic properties which can be used as a magnet (the characteristic ofmolecular magnetism named single molecule magnets (SMMs)) at low temperature. Theteam of Christou G. had proved that2-pyridine methanol (Hhmp) and2-Pyridinemethanol(Hhep) can widely apply in the research of SMMs filed. Therefore, we synthesized9complexes containing2-Pyridinemethanol,2metal complexes containing2-pyridineethanol and4metal complexes containing2-methyl-8-Quinolinol (HL). Allcomplexes were characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction, elemental analysis,infrared spectral and magnetism. The main contents are listed as follows:1. Nine complexes were obtained with the ligand2-Hydroxymethylpyridine (Hhmp):[Cu4(hmp)4(CH3COO)2[N(CN)2]2·CH3CN]n(1),{Cu(hmp)[N(CN)2]}(2),[Cu4(hmp)4(CH3COO)4·4H2O](3),{Cu(hmp)4[N(CN)2]2}(4),[Co3(hmp)4(CH3COO)2(N3)2](5),{Co4(hmp)6[N(CN)2]4}(6),[Mn4(hmp)6(SCN)4](7),[Ni4(hmp)4Cl4(CH3CH2OH)(H2O)3·H2O](8),[DyCo(hmp)3(NO3)3](9), which werecharacterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction, elemental analysis and infrared spectral.Complex1exhibits1D chain structure with [N(CN)2] anions connecting capped [Cu4O4]cubane cores. Complex2shows2D supramolecular framework with [N(CN)2] anionsconnecting [Cu2O2] rhombus cores. Complex3is a defect dicubane-like [Cu4O6] clusterwith two missing vertices, forming2D supramolecular framework by hydrogen bondsO-H···O.4is a mononuclear copper complex in which [N(CN)2] anion and Cu2+ion arechelated into hexatomic ring.5is a linear Co-O-Co-O-Co trinuclear complex. The cores ofcomplex6and7are similar to3, vairous weak interaction exist in two complexes (6withC-H···N,7with C-H···N), resulting into2D supramolecular structure, respectively.Complex8shows a [Ni4O4] cubane core, the existence of O-H···Cl interactions lead to2Dsupramolecular structure. Complex9can form2D supramolecular structure by C-H···Oweak interactions. Studies of the magnetic properties indicate antiferromagneticinteractions between the centers of1,3,9, respectively, and ferromagnetic interactions between the centers of7; the investigations indicat that1and3both bind to DNA viaclassical intercalative mode and quench the fluorescence of bovine serum albumin (BSA)through static quenching. Meanwhile,1has weak antiproliferative activities against humanlung carcinoma cell line (A-549) and none antiproliferative activities against human coloncarcinoma cell lines (HCT-116) in vitro,3has weak antiproliferative activities againsthuman lung carcinoma cell line (A-549) and human colon carcinoma cell lines (HCT-116)in vitro, respectively.2. Two complexes were obtained with the ligand2-Pyridineethanol (Hhep),[Cu2(hep)2(CH3COO)2·4H2O](10),[Cd(hep)(N3)2]n(11), which were characterized bysingle-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis and FT-IR spectra.10is a dinuclearcopper complex in which the copper center is five-coordinate, and futher shaped into2Dsupramolecular framework by O-H···O. Complex11shows one-dimensional (1D) chainbridged by azide anions, resulting into2D via C-H···N weak interactions.3. Four complexes were obtained with the ligand2-methyl-8-Quinolinol (HL):[Ni2(L)3(HL)(N3)·H2O](12),{Ni4(L)4[N(CN)]4·4H2O}(13),[Ni4Na2(L)8(CH3CN)2·4H2O](14),[Co(L)2·H2O](15). Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis reveals that12is adinuclear nickel complex and the coordinate environment of metal ions are alike, whichcan intend into1D by C-H···N interactions.13shows a [Ni4O4] cubane core, and eachnickel ion adopts a distorted octahedral geometry. The metal ions of14are composed offour nickel and two sodium, in which each nickel ion is six-coordinate and each sodiumion is five-coordinate.15is mononuclear cobalt complex, and the cobalt center ispresented in five-coordinated environment. The2D structure is formed through O-H···Oclassical hydrogen bonds. Studies of the magnetic properties indicate thatantiferromagnetic interactions betweent the centers in12,15, respectively, andferromagnetic interactions betweent the centers in13.
