Low efficiency, fast tool wear and poor stability of the processing quality are series of problemsin the machining process of difficult-to-cut materials, such as titanium alloys. Since it has manydistinctive advantages in improving the material removal rate, high feed milling (HFM) has prospectsof broad application in the machining of difficult-to-cut materials. So it is necessary to make thoroughresearch in the best choice of high feed cutting tools, optimization of cutting parameters andaccumulation of HFM process knowledge. In this paper, the technology on high feed milling of TC4alloy is deeply studied from the aspects of cutting force, cutting temperature and tool life. What’smore, a relevant process database management system is designed and implemented. The mainresearch works are listed as follows:(1) Experimental study on high feed milling of TC4with indexable inserts is carried out. Theinfluences of cutting parameters on cutting force and cutting temperature are analyzed. And the toollife and main failure mode are discussed, combining high feed milling of TC4typical structure with asquare indexable insert. Meanwhile, the advantages and disadvantages of high feed milling cutterswith indexable inserts are summarized.(2) A series of experimental study is carried out with self-propelled rotary milling cutter andindexable insert milling cutter, in which the cutting force are analyzed and compared. And theinfluences of cutting parameters on cutting force and cutting temperature are analyzed as well as thetool life and main failure mode in milling of TC4with self-propelled rotary milling cutter. What’smore, the key factors in tool wear are discussed.(3) Applying modular development method, an initial high efficiency NC machining processdatabase management system with the feature of high integration, network and high serviceperformance is designed and implemented on the platform with SQL Server2005and C#. Thus, thefunction in managing the fundamental data, process knowledge, typical structure and recommendationof cutting parameters are achieved in the database.
