Shape memory polymers and their composites are a new type of smart materials, which offer anumber of potential technical advantages compared with other shape memory materials, includinghigh recoverable strain, low density and low cost and so on, and their excellent performance is a hottopic of research recently. In this paper, based on the numerical simulation method, thethermo-mechanical properties of shape memory polymers and their composites are studied.Firstly, based on the viscoelastic theories and finite element method, shape memory polymers aresimulated by transforming a constitutive model into finite element software. Secondly, the coolingprogress in the shape memory progress is studied in detail. It is found that response stress decreasesfirst and then rises again with the increase of temperature in the cooling progress of shape memorypolymers. Based on the present study, the stress valley value as well as the whole stress level reduceswith the decrease of cooling rate. Finally, based on finite element simulation on the shape memory polymers, particle-reinforcedshape memory composites are simulated to study shape recovery performance. With the increase ofvolume fraction in the particle-reinforced materials, the shape recovery ratio of particle-reinforcedshape memory composites increases, which contributes to the recovery performance of shape memorycomposites. It is shown that the cooling rate as well as the particle volume fractions can change theglass transition temperature.
