Groundwater is one of the most important water supply in North China Plain, but presently overdraft of groundwater in this area induces many changes including groundwater environment, recharge-discharge conditions and water renewal. Besides, some serious effect on development and utilization of groundwater resources are also brought.China Geological and Environmental Monitoring Institute initiate project named as“Groundwater Dynamic Investigation and Assessment in North China Plain”in 2006, software development and application for dynamic groundwater assessment in North China Plain is one subproject of the project. The main assessment content of the subproject includes groundwater quantity calculation and overdraft evaluation.This paper reviewed the research status of groundwater quantity calculation and overdraft evaluation at home and abroad, briefly described the extent of dynamic groundwater investigation in North China Plain. Based on the achievements of previous investigation, groundwater quantity calculation and overdraft evaluation is carried out combining with secondary development of GIS.Software development and application for dynamic and fast groundwater assessment in North China Plain is a relatively new research subject , therefore, the subject is quite meaningful and significant. This subject is a beneficial attempt in the field of groundwater assessment, also it achieves some new progress and recognitions.The main achievements of this subject can concluded as follows:(1) By using visual basic and secondary development software of GIS such as Map Objects, a system platform is built on dynamic groundwater assessment in North China Plain.(2) By adopting groundwater-balance theory and methods based on gridding idea, regional groundwater quantity assessment on integrated hydrogeology unit or administrative region unit is completed. The recharge rate, discharge rate and variable storage quantity is counted for each unit, besides the display and output for datasheet are also provided in this platform.(3) According to some assessment standards, overdraft evaluation on integrated hydrogeology unit or administrative region unit is complished. Besides, the display and output of classification map for overdraft evaluation are alse provided through the tool of GIS.
