The South Jingyang Plateau is located in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province, China. Due to long term artificial irrigation since 1970 s, ground water level has been significantly raised and cracks have been widely developed. As a result, loess landslides occurred frequently, leading to serious loss of people’s life and property. This article takes the plateau edge cracks in South Jingyang Plateau landslide area as the main object, combining typical geological environment and landslides characteristics in South Jingyang Plateau, mainly research on the cracks characteristics and the mode of the Landslide’s formation and development, using field geological survey, drilling, adit excavation and numerical calculation. The main achievements are as follows:⑴Through geological survey, we obtain the detailed statistics of the cracks, including the cracks in the surface, in the top and in the internal of the slope. First, we talk about the main types of the cracks in the surface of the slope. Then, we focus on the development of the cracks in the top, including the distribution, the characteristic parameters, the type and the development law of cracks in the top. Finally, we collect statistics of the cracks in the internal of the slope.⑵Through drilling and adit excavation, we draw a typical profile of the geological structure. The cracks are divided into collapsible crack and unloading crack according to the way of the crack’s formation and development. Then, we investigate the formation process and influencing factors of the two types of cracks. In addition, we analysis the influences of the crack’s development to stability of landslides and the maximum depth of the development of the cracks, summing up the development scale of landslides in the study area.⑶Summing up the connection between the cracks and slope geological structure. In addition, we analysis the effect of the cracks to landslides’ formation and development. In terms of the landslides’ formation, the crack is primarily as advantage aisle to surface water infiltration, playing an important role on the raising of groundwater level. In terms of the landslides’ development, the crack can promote the development of landslides. Besides, it also can influence the mode of the development of landslides.
