Plantonic algae is a group of aquatic and phototrophic microrganisms with great variety. It is an ecological unit rather than a taxonomic one. Algal identification is the base for further ecological and biological studies. Nowadays, there are many taxonomic divergences and conflicts between the species lists offered by different researchers. In order to solve these algal taxonomic problems, this study carried out the work below:1) Algal classification was studied on the comparisons among different authoritative classification systems as well as updated phylogeny research results, and maked more reasonable and consistant with algal revolution. 2) Apractical and informative database of common freshwater phytoplankton species in Guangdong province was constructed based on microscopic photos and species traits from the reservoir samples. 3) Fifteen key recognition traits were extracted from the common phytoplankton species of Guangdong province to provide multi-entrance algal retrieval system. 4) Latest developments on algal taxonomy were summarized: newly revised names and displacement of new taxonomic units were applied in the text.In all, our study setted up three databases(freshwater algal inventory database, common species information database, common species retrieval character database) by comparing and integrating different classification systems and collections of common phytoplankton species in Guangdong province. A multi-entrance algal retrieval system was constructed based on biotopes and morphological characteristics. This new retrieval system, which correlates with computer technology and takes the key characters for identification, can provide standard-unified, efficient and accurate identification service.
