In the free grazing area of typical Stipa breviflora desert steppe, four experimental treatment plots, including control (CK), nitrogen addition (N), water addition (W), as well as nitrogen and water addition (NW)were set up. A two year test was carried out. The sampling and laboratory analysis methods were used to study the soil moisture content, soil nutrient characteristics, nutrient utilization efficiency, nutrient re-absorption rate and stoichiometric characteristics of Stipa breviflora. The main results were as follows:1. N and W had a certain regulating effect on soil moisture content, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) content. N and NW significantly increased the content of soil TN content (P<0.05), while W and NW significantly improved the soil moisture content (P<0.05). All treatments had no significant effect on the TP content (P>0.05)2. Stipa breviflora could adapt to the environment changes through adjusting the proportion of nutrient elements (C:N, C:P, N:P). TN,TP and TOC contents of Stipa breviflora were different due to the different growth periods and organs after N and W. Under N and W conditions, leaf N:P of Stipa breviflora significantly increased; leaf C:N showed a significant decrease. Leaf C.P showed a variation of inconsistent (P<0.05), decreasing in the mature period and no significant changes (except N increased the C:P) in withering period.3. Both N and W significantly reduced the utilization efficiency of the Stipa breviflora (P<0.05), the peak value of 210.73g.g-1 was found in CK;N and W showed no significantly impact on N resorption efficiency (P>0.05); W significantly reduced the P reabsorption efficiency (P<0.05)...
