Material damping is one of the main forms of damping, and it is also one of the basic properties of the material. Its accurate measurement has important research and application value. Due to the change of the experimental environment and the damping characteristic of the tested object under the material damping test, the result is not stable and comparable. In this paper, the experimental principle and method of material damping test are analyzed, and the main reason for the instability of damping test result is studied.Firstly, the testing method of damping materials based on the theory, of damping measurement of time domain method and frequency domain method and phase difference of stress and strain method, analysis of their respective applicable; and the most commonly used frequency domain method, find the measurement error of reason and experimental design was verified;Secondly, the dynamical structure of the damping material test were studied was found to cause the main reason for the instability of the measuring results caused by experimental environment test system changes of boundary conditions, through experiments to verify the boundary conditions change will make the measurement results in the introduction of structural damping, resulting in the instability of the damping test, and put forward the decision boundary conditions change a judgment on the basis;Finally, a set of supporting free beam method is designed to test the damping device, and the feasibility is verified by experiments, which provides a new way to improve the damping test method.
