Vegetation restoration is the basic measure to control desertification land, and it is divided into two parts, which are artificial vegetation construction and natural vegetation restoration, and the vegetation restoration along Tongliao to Huolinhe Railway is mainly by artificial vegetation construction. The research first analyses the construction technology and effects of artificial forest along the railway in the Horqin sandy land and shows that, great achievements have been made in technical aspects of selection of tree species and improvement of preservation rate in recent years of the railway, the survival rate of afforestation in the three site types is more than 75%, among these the average survival rate of afforestation in low-lying saline alkali land is 81.80%, and the average survival rate of afforestation in sandy land and meadow land are 82.04% and 89.59%, respectively, all have reached the standard of afforestation in aeolian arid area, not only to form the continuous forest along the railway, but also to inhibit the expansion of land desertification, and to achieve a certain economic and ecological benefits. However, the preservation rate of afforestation of different site types has large difference, the preservation rate of afforestation in meadow land, low-lying saline alkali land and sandy land are 86.89%,63.11% and 57.73%, respectively. The main reason is that water storage capacity of sandy soil is low, in later extensive tending management, the forest died due to soil water deficit. The choices of afforestation tree species mainly are poplar Zhelin 4, Salix matsudana, clove, Pinus sylvestris, Caragana, Tamarix and elm, and poplar Zhelin 4 showed significant differences in tree height, DBH and crown width among different sites, and the main reason of these differences is poplar Zhelin 4 was suitable for better water and fertilizer area; Caragana showed no significant differences in plant height and crown width among different sites, the main reason is the root absorption capacity of Caragana was strong so growth difference is not obvious among different sites; due to freezing injury of newborn branches, clove showed no significant differences in plant height among different sites but crown width did. In recent years, the phenomena of large area of "stunted tree" of poplar and low preservation rate of afforestation in sandy land show that:Moisture is an important factor in the process of the construction of artificial forest, meanwhile the control experiment is further pointed out that in the same site type, the preservation rate of afforestation of poplar Zhelin 4 can be increased from 75.67% to 92.21% in plenty of water, the average ground diameter from 8.92 cm to 14.28 cm, the average tree height from 422.83 cm to 498.58 cm, and the average crown width from 176.00 cm to 201.49 cm in the same condition, these show that water has a significant effect on improving the preservation rate and growth rate.The restoration method of natural vegetation is enclosure, the enclosure of natural grassland and artificial forest indicate that, it is helpful to the restoration of vegetation and the suppression of expansion of desertification land. There are 30 species in the enclosure natural grassland,21 in the enclosure artificial forest land and 9 in the grazing area, which indicate that enclosure can increase species diversity. Meanwhile, the enclosure also greatly controll the spread of invasive species sandbur, inhibit the spread along the railway. The main tree species are elm, poplar and willow in the process of enclosure, and elm is 80.63%, poplar is 16.69%, willow is 2.68%, excessive wild elms will have an impact on the safety of railway traffic, and after the analysis of the distribution of the wild elms on both sides of the railway, because of the phototaxis of plants, in the shady of the east-west railway there are a large number of elms borned on the upper part of slope, and the growth is better than the lower part of slope, which are more likely to affect the railway traffic, thus become a multiple zone of safety accident, and need to develop prevention and control measures.In order to improve the utilization of water resources scientific and reasonable, after analyzing and summarizing the successful experience of the JiNing-Erlianhaote Railway drip irrigation afforestation and according to the actual situation of Tongliao to Huolinhe Rrailway, then proposing the feasibility and necessity of the application of drip irrigation afforestation in this railway. At last, aiming at the contradiction between agriculture and forestry in the process of vegetation restoration along the railway line, and by using the methods of investigation and interview, then putting forward the scientific rational planning of land use, zoning as local conditions and using grass, shrubs and trees whatever is suitable according to site conditions, building advantage region layout and professional production pattern. And making strong use of the railway protection forest in vegetation restoration in Horqin sandy land and making full use of the economic and ecological benefits of forest ecology.
