The Bintuni Basin is located in western Irian Jay, Indonesia, which is a part of the northern Australia collision zone and experienced complicated tectonic sedimentary evolution, including rifting process, drifting process and thrusting process. The basin was mainly controlled by continuous extrude tectonic actions since the Miocene, generated the leading edge in the southeast and developed foreland basin. This paper is based on the analysis of the basic geology, petroleum geology and hydrocarbon accumulation, summarized the hydrocarbon pooling conditions, controlling factors and petroleum systems, calculated undiscovered resources of the basin, and further forecasts the potential areas for petroleum exploration. In summary, The strata of the basin was developed from late Paleozoic, Mesozoic to Cenozoic. The stratigraphic sequence can be divided into two parts, which are the former Tertiary layer that is mainly composed of clastic rock (from Carboniferous to Cretaceous sedimentary strata) and the Tertiary layer that is mainly composed of carbonate (Palaeocene to Pleistocene series). The hydrocarbon sources of the basin are the mudstone of the Ainim formation and lower Kembelangan formation, while the main reservoir are the sandstone from lower Kembelangan formation Ainim formation and Kais formation. Layered shale is the main seal of the former Tertiary reservoir, and the regional seal is provided by Steenkool formation. And according to the characters of the reservoir and the seal, divide two plays.Three types of traps have been identified from the Bintuni basin, which are structural trap, stratigraphic trap and structural- stratigraphic trap. The main migration processes include vertical migration and lateral migration.Bintuni basin has developed three possible sets of petroleum systems from the Paleogene to Quaternary, which are Aifam-Kais petroleum system, Kembelangan-Kembelangan/Kais petroleum system and Klasafet-Kais petroleum system.By using subjective probability method and the discovery process method, this paper calculated the basin undiscovered resources based on plays. Finally, by considering the source rock, reserviors, seals, distributing of the fields, traps, wells, tectonic elements and facies, the exploration potential zone of the basin has been identified.
