The analysis of gamma spectrum is a crucial step in neutron activation analysis. The statistical fluctuation and background influence the analytical precision. Therefore, effectively reducing the statistical fluctuations and deducting the background can improve the accuracy of spectrum analysis.Different analytical methods make the different accuracy of qualitative and quantitative analysis of elements in samples, thus selection and flexible use of spectra analytical methods also are required. In this paper, the method of Fourier transform was used to analyze the neutron activation spectrum. Firstly, the feasibility of this method was verified by smoothing and deducting background with artificial constructed spectrum. Then, this method was used to analyze the neutron activation spectrum which was obtained by 14 MeV pulsed neutron irradiating a certain thickness of coal samples with MCNP code. This work include: 1) The neutron activation spectrum was smoothed with Gaussian low-pass filter, and the ideal parameters were confirmed by comparatively analyzing smoothing effect with different filter parameters. 2) The background of neutron activation spectrum was subtracted with Gaussian low-pass filter. The error variation of the net area of full-energy peaks before and after background subtraction was discussed, and the results showed this method can effectively deduct the background and improve analytical accuracy. 3) The software was designed by MATLAB GUI, and the software can make the spectra processing more convenient and easy to operate. It is also beneficial to comparatively analyze the results of data processing of each module.
