Abrasive water jet technology is a well-developed cold processing technique which has been used extensively in different fields. In a abrasive water jet system, high pressure pump is the power source, and it plays a very important role in the system. However, it is also the one which often failed in a short period of time since it usually worked under very high fluctuate pressure.To improve pump’s fatigue life, autofrettage process has been applied on most parts worked under ultra-high fluctuated pressure. In order to find how the autofrettage process improves the fatigue properties of equipment, a high pressure cylinder has been analyzed in detail.Based on theoretical analysis and finite element analysis, residual stress on internal surface of the cylinder is the one which improved the fatigue life of the cylinder.To further find out the right residual stress, the fatigue life of the cylinder has been predicted.In a word, this paper explored the mechanism of autofrettage process improving high pressure cylinder’s fatigue life. Based on this paper, proper heat treatment conditions and autofrettage conditions have been recommended.
