Photonic crystal is a photonic band gap and the dielectric constant distribution thus showing a crystal photonic bandgap properties. Compared with the electron with photon as the information carrier, is an ideal choice. As a class of periodic dielectric structures in optical wavelength scale artificial design and production of crystal, with special structure, it can be a special method is different from the traditional optical materials and equipment induced unusual phenomena and photon activities. Photonic crystal is regarded as a kind of new material is equivalent to the semiconductor crystal, but performance is more prominent than the semiconductor, people hope that the development of photonic crystal technology can be like semiconductor technology, leading to a new round of technological breakthroughs, industrial revolution.Based on the theory of photonic crystal, applications and preparation methods are studied in detail. Based on the photonic crystal current production methods, firstly, colloidal microspheres were prepared, in the analysis of the current several commonly used method, the alkali catalyzed Stober method improved preparation. After the introduction of the various photonic crystal preparation method, preparation method of colloidal photonic crystals prepared, because of the complexity of 3D crystals, we focus on the effectiveness of self-made highest colloid method. Colloidal self-assembly method due to low cost, its method is simple and easy, innocuity and the like, has been widely applied to the preparation of 3D photonic crystals.Colloidal self-assembly method, for good optical properties of photonic crystal preparation, first need to choose a good monodisperse colloidal microspheres. This paper focuses on the preparation and simple gravity sedimentation, as well as the effectiveness of the optimal vertical sedimentation method, and were prepared by two methods SiO2 colloidal crystals, and the samples were characterized. Compare the two prepared in a manner discussed, and by changing the parameters of the experimental environment, the observed changes in the optical properties of the photonic crystal, were further analyzed for the production process of the experiment.
