The unique landform and geological structure in Xinyuan County controls not only the changes of geological environment and regional water and heat conditions, but also the formation, development, and distribution of geological hazards. Controlled by topography, hydrometeorology, plants, intensity and patterns of human activities, and geological condition variations, the major geological hazard is landslides, followed by collapses, debris flows, and so on. Geological hazards not only threat the regular productions and livings of local people, but also cause great losses to the underdevelopment county economy. Moreover, they have a great negative impact on regional unique travel resources. Therefore, to control and prevent geological hazards becomes an urgent task, and this paper proceeds in this context. On the basis of present information, detailed investigations were carried out on potential areas in which geological hazards(e.g., landslides, collapses, and debris flows) may exist in 11 villages and towns of Xinyuan County with remote sensing interpretation, ground surveys, mapping and engineering survey. The basic characteristics, development patterns, and geological environment of geological hazards were figured out. Furthermore, the risks of those geological hazards were assessed and the local region was divided to potential regions and dangerous regions. The geological hazard information system and the monitor and prevention system based on local people were established, which provide valuable geological information to guide geological hazard control and the planning of regional geological hazard prevention. |
