Satellite data has gradually become the main means of effectively observational tools with the development of remote sensing technology, and that not only plays a more and more important role in the cloud characteristic but also makes for the quantitative research of the cloud distribution evolution and the elaborate forecast. The horizontal and vertical distribution charactristics of cloud parameters (height, thick, cloudlayers and so on) over the coastal waters of China are systematically analysed base on the ISCCP-D2 dataset from 1999 to 2009 and the CloudSat data products from 2008 to 2010. At the same time, this paper has also discussed both the relationship between cloud and the meteorological elements and the practical application of CloudSat. We can get the following conclusions:Two kinds of satellite observations about ISCCP and CloudSat are basically identical. The high value area edge of low cloud amount is found along the coasts over the East China Sea. The low and medium clouds are important parts of total cloud amount in spring, autumn and winter, however, the hige clouds dominate in the summer. As the number of cloudlayers increase, the cloudlayers spacing gradully narrowed. It is noteworthy that deep convective clouds and nimbostratus are distributed almost entirely while other cloud types mainly on the specific height.High clouds account for about half of the total cloud amount in the summer over the South China Sea. In addition, on the one hand, the high cloud especially cirrus is much higher than the low and medium cloud from April to December while the low represents the main body in other months. On the other hand, since March to the following year in February, the total cloud amount’s vertical gradient presents as ∞ type whose symmetry center appeared in August and the vertical variation of cirrus, altostratus and altocumulus make a greater contrubution to the total.Although the dominate cloud type is different between the East and South China Sea during various seasons, the annual average total cloud amount is roughly equal. Stratomulus and moisture flux divergence as well as sea surface temperature are neagtivly correlated, indicating that low-level moisture convergence and smaller sea surface temperature conducive to stratocumulus’s development. Probability of Cloud Free Line Of Sight exist great differences due to the observation angle and height. What’s more, there is consistent Probability of Cloud Free Line Of Sight distribution symmetrical along the vertical axis.
