Static assemble sample is defined as the difference between several hoursinterval forecasts in this study. Comparisons between static assemble samples and themodel errors constructed by the difference between model results and satellitealtimeter merged observation data indicate that static assemble sample can beregarded as an approximation to the background error, and the static assemble sampleof24h bias of significant wave height is optimal from the error probability densitystatistics and spatial-temporal correlation analysis. Based on the optimal staticassemble sample, background error correlations is analyzed. Several global wave dataassimilation experiments employing Jason-1satellite altimeter data were conductedby using a filter method based on the static assemble sample in2008. The resultsindicate that the assimilation method based on static assemble sample can improveand enhance the capability of the wave model significantly. Three wave forecastexperiments employing the data assimilation method were conducted. Compared withNDBC and satellite data (Jason-1and Jason-2satellite altimeter data),the assimilationeffectiveness and its duration are analyzed in detail.
