As the first big families cutworm lepidoptera, many are important pests of agricultureand forestry, had caused great losses to people’s production and life. And the lack ofprofessional and technical personnel, and brought difficulties to our appraisal work. Withthe development of computer vision technology and the wide application of mathematicalmorphology, an entomologist at the combination of insect taxonomy and mathematicalmorphology, created a new discipline-insect morphology. The establishment of thediscipline and a large number of facts prove that the use of computer image processingtechnology for automatic identification of feasibility and practicability of the insects, insectclassification for non-professional personnel also appraisal work provides the convenience.Based on a large number of domestic and foreign, on the basis of literature study, thereference of insect taxonomy and the theoretical basis of mathematical morphology andgave a brief introduction of the relevant background knowledge, so that they can better andmore comprehensive understanding and grasp the taxonomic identification of insectmorphology in aspects of the application. At the same time, the research goal, the researchcontent, experimental scheme, introduces in detail the technical route, etc.To attest the application research of math-morphological characters (MMC) of mothwings for classification and identification of Noctuidae. In this paper, the fourth chapterand the fifth chapter, by using digital technology to acquire and process insect images,BugShape application software, the collection of specimens of cutworm’s right front wings13MMCs, such as rectangularity, elongation, lobation, eccentricity, sphericity, roundnessand movement invariants including Hu1and Hu2,which are invariants to the image size anddirection, were selected. The methods including variance analysis, stepwise discriminantanalysis and cluster analysis were used to study the feasibility, reliability and importance ofeach MMC as classification attribute on insect classification. Analysis result is chosenfrom among13mathematical morphology for the classification identification of the mothhas significant characteristic parameters, and to compare the effect on their size.Classification and discrimination of noctuids species were realized by using the characterparameters of moth wings. The described phylogenetic relationship of noctuids species were consistent with that based on the traditional morphological observation. The resultsindicate that MMCs of moth wings can be used to identify moths rapidly and laid a solidfoundation to gradually realize computer aided identification and digital forestry pestsidentification.
