With the rapid development of industry, agriculture and other sectors, theproduction of solid waste is also increasing. Many of our cities are surrounded by lotsof waste. The most important method of handling a variety of solid waste is Landfill. The harmful Landfill leachate leakage to humans may pollute the surrounding soil, surface water and ground water. Electrical detection method has become the maindirection of the scholars of various countries because of its simple, convenient, lowcost, high degree of automation, non-destructive and no secondary pollution. However, there is no proven methods and real-time electrical equipment used in monitoring ofleachate leakage.Electrical prospecting is a method of identifying structural features under theground and distribution of mineral, which is based on the study of the difference ofelectrical properties. Characteristics of spatial and temporal distribution are differentbetween the artificial and natural electromagnetic field. This technique applied to theleakage monitoring of landfill can determine the presence of leaks by the comparisonwith the potential value and the resistivity of the area. After analyzing and simplifying of impervious structure of landfill, a equivalentelectrical detection model was proposed. We can compared experimental groove asthe actual landfill. Then the grid potential method, resistivity method and are noderesistance method are used to detect the leakage situation for monitoring the effects ofdifferent leakage. The results prove that the potential value and the node resistance monitoringmethods can effectively detect the leakage points and can be able to trace thediffusion state of leachate. Also, the data acquisition of parallel potential method hasstrong real-time property because it can collect the potential value of the field area ofmeasuring points at one time. The resistivity method can not achieve real-timecollection of multi measurement points and large data, and has a certain period. So itis not suitable for leakage real-time monitoring due to its poor real-time performance. However, the resistivity method can well detect the diffusion range and path of theleakage, so it can be well used for the leakage detection outside the landfill. The first electrical landfill leakage monitoring system is development accordingto the theoretical research, experiments and development of electrical monitoringinstrument of Jilin University. Monitoring results show that electrical monitoringmethod and its ancillary electrical equipment is fully capable of performing real-timemonitoring of landfill leachate seeps task.
