In the last century, since the laser appears, it is widely used in machinery manufacturing, measuring range, holographic images, medical equipment, optical communication under the seawater, environmental monitoring in the sea and other fields, which its transmission rate is fast, strong anti-jamming capability, good directivity, strong brightness, the advantages of good monochromaticity, The sea is a relatively transparent medium, seawater composition is quite complex, containing soluble organic matter, suspended solids, the material such as plankton on the optical properties of the water has certain influence. There are many kinds of the optical properties of the water, including absorption, scattering and reflection, refraction, etc., at the same time, these features is influenced by the outside conditions, and many scholars and experts at home and abroad has also studed the optical properties of the water, it is concluded that refractive index of seawater related to many factors. The composition of the water is very complex, however, that in sea water, mainly of dissolved substances are inorganic salt, such as Na Cl, Mg SO4, KCl, Na HCO3 and Mg Cl2 and so on. Because of the unevenness of the sea, which makes the refractive index of the water particularly serious difficulties in the detection and study of underwater laser communications heavy. Therefore, study the the refractive index of the water has a very important significance.Based on the main components and optical properties of the seawater, this paper researched the effects of different seawater salinity on the refractive index of the water, Dissolving of substance in water contain Na Cl, KCl, Mg SO4, Mg Cl2, Na HCO3, etc. Based on the theory of those predecessors, we have concluded the refractive index of the seawater. By comparing some common methods when study the refractive index of the water: analysis method, experiment method and Monte-Carlo simulation method, based on the principle of linking theory with practice, we chose the experimental method. Through experimental platform, compound the inorganic-salt solution to simulate the seawater, measured the effect of seawater’s sea salt, the salt’s concentration, the wavelength of laser and seawater temperature on the refractive index of the water. The measurement data in experiment were collated and comparative analysis, then draw some conclusions. These data and conclusions provide a theoretical and experimental evidence for the study of the refractive index of the water in the future.
