The mechanism of visual pattern adaptation has been well studied for a long time, as a basic mechanism closely related to neural coding, and it is highly bound up with the orientation discrimination and cortex plasticity. The inherent mechanism is still controversial, though a lot of presuppositions have been raised from synapsis depression to network regulation. Almost all of these hypotheses are based on neurons, but whether astrocytes have participated in it and the way that astrocytes function are seldom studied. Meanwhile, the strategies of pattern adaptation in different cortical levels have not been studied thoroughly. Investigating the inherent mechanism will help us understand the origin and functional organization of pattern adaptation. We record visual evoked potential of the whole cortex, and we use intrinsic signal optical imaging to study the cortex in a more precise spatial resolution. Based on our signal, we have further studied the strategy of functional regulation which pattern adaptation is based on. In the meantime, we use DL-TBOA as a tool to block the transmission of glutamate and study the aftereffect of pattern adaptation. The result listed as follow:(1) Pattern adaptation effect by VEP recording. Magnitude of N1 and P1 component of adapted orientation has decreased and the latency hasn’t changed. (2) Pattern adaptation effect by global signal of intrinsic signal recording. The global signal of adapted orientation has decreased. (3) Pattern adaptation can be found on any domain of visual cortex, and it is a stimulus-sensitive mode. (4) The dosage of TBOA affects the magnitude of VEP and blocks the aftereffect of pattern adaptation in both VEP and intrinsic signal recording. Our study shows that pattern adaptation is mainly a cortical mechanism which can be influenced by feed forward and feedback information from other cortical areas. A unique strategy of functional organization is used to form a similar aftereffect after pattern adaptation. Moreover, astrocytes have participated in the process of adaptation founding, and disturbing of astrocytes will affect the founding of adaptation.
