In the studies of ancient lake, total organic carbon content of sediments is an significance geochemical index. Comprehensive result of terrigenous organic matter input, lake production capacity and preservation condition lead to the change of total organic carbon content, which can be used as an alternative indicators of climate and environmental change. As a widely used geological analysis method, X-ray fluorescence scanner not only can realize the in situ, fast and nondestructive scanning, but also can recover qualitative or quantitative analysis results of sediment samples. Incoherent scattering and coherent scattering counting rate can be well achieved during the Itrax multi-function core scanner experimental process which produced by Sweden Cox Company.Total organic carbon content and incoherent/coherent scattering ratio has a certain correlation which found by summarizing previous studies. Theoretically demonstrates the related relations between total organic carbon content and X-ray scattering intensity ratio using the formation density and effective atomic number theory,Research takes core examples from Songliao Basin Nenjiang formation. Analysis of total organic carbon content, X-ray fluorescence and mineral content have conducted on core samples. Based on the experimental results, correlation analysis, multivariate regression analysis has been carried on. The results confirmed that the total organic carbon content and incoherent/coherent scattering ratio has a good linear correlation. The results are: the correlation coefficient r=0.795, has significant correlation, TOC=11.871(Inc/Coh)-33.342.The correlation coefficient vary with total organic carbon content, when the TOC content > 5%, the correlation coefficient r=0.867, the correlation coefficient increases with the increase of total organic carbon content. High organic matter content rock has a low density, which means the average atomic number is low, incoherent scattering effect is stronger, while coherent scattering is weak, X-ray scattering ratio changes obviously, so samples with high TOC content can better indicated by the X-ray scattering ratio.Compared previous research and this study shows that take advantage of Inc/Coh to estimate the content of TOC can use the form of TOC=a(Inc/Coh)+b(constant b are negative). the slope and the intercept of the equation is different because of different lakes has different range of total organic carbon content and Inc/Coh ratio. When using Inc/Coh ratio estimation TOC content need specific discuss respectively according to the area.
