To the ships sailing on the sea, whether it is daily life or power machinery operation, the fresh water is essential. Carrying fresh water not only limits the loading of the ship, but also limits the shipping cycle. At the same time, the prolonged storage of fresh water may bring a security risk. Nowadays, seawater desalination device is more widely equipped on the large ships, but to the smaller ones, very few of them equipments such a device. Therefore, the design of a desalination device which is suitable for small and medium sized vessels to solve the problem of shortage of fresh water when the ship is out in the sea is very essential. In the study,a new desalination device which is based on the technology of cryogenic distillation is design. It can take advantage of the ship’s exhaust heat with high efficiency. The device utilizes exhaust heat of marine diesel engine as a heat source for evaporation of sea water. Sea water in efficiency desalination device exchanges energy with high temperature flue gas and evaporates into tube and shell condenser and is condensed into fresh water. Based on the existing evaporator patents, improved its structure, Type Selection and Design of the condenser. This paper takes 30 kw Oil-fired boiler as the research object, design and make theoretical calculations of the evaporator and condenser, coming to a conclusion that the effective heat transfer area were 2.42m2 and 0.566m2.Programming methods are also used to solve the mathematical model of desalination device, and the relationship between the temperature of flue gas, water inlet flow and the yield of fresh water is also analyzed. At the same time, the desalination bench is designed and built, and the experiments are finished by it. the results showed that freshwater yield increases with gas flow increasing, but increased more slowly, with the increasing flow of seawater that the fresh water production increased in the first and then decreased. Then analyze the experimental results reasonably.
