Geo-information Technology,Nanotechnology and Life Science Technologieshave been listed as the most promising technology in the21st century by the USDepartment of Labor. Mahmud Kashghari published the first version of Uighur mapin 《Divanu Lughat-it Turk》 in the11th century. According to the existingliterature,the research and application of Uyghur character in modern cartography andgeographic information system is very scarce. Existing in both Chinese and Englishbasic geographic information system software does not support the Uyghur characterapplication in the spatial and attribute data management, it is hard to input theattribute of Uyghur character into in the table, it is also hard to conduct spatial querybased on the Uyghur attribute data. There is a lack of effective work platform forUyghur spatial information acquisition, storage, management, query and display,which greatly limits the application and development of Uyghur spatial informationservice. This paper aimed at an important subject of lacking an effective workplatform for Uyghur spatial information acquisition, storage, management, query anddisplay, focused on the Uyghur Anotation, editing space object and the key technicalproblems of query system for graph and characters informations. On the basis of theunderlying GIS system, developed a system prototype of Uyghur GIS tools by VB6.0.Research work can be summarized as:1)Analysis and summary the Anotation ofUyghur maps and the expression feature of Uyghur characteristics in spatialinformation;2)Realized Uyghur localization of interface on Visual Basic platform,installed Unicode UniBox10.ocx controls and three kinds of existing Uyghur fonts,which completed localization of system’s application interface;3) DrawTextWfunction expression was initial proposed and added Unicode control for supportingand displaying ethnic minority texts, solved the map’s Uyghur Anotation on VisualBasic platform;4)Replaced original ANSI code controls with Unicode UniBox10.ocx controls that supports displaying Uyghur characters on the basis of the source code, added InStr, ReDim function expression call ID,TEXT of the declaration in thequery interface, realized the spatial query of Uygur characters,point,line and plane;5)Commonly used function modules of system, such as drawing module, toolbars,module code function transformation,realized the seamless compatible with Uyghurcharacter;6) Realized query and display according to the ID or TEXT formats,whichsupports Uyghur Unicode geographic names, realized save and import Unicode map.This research realized the Uyghur Anotation, editing space object and keytechnical problems of query system for graph and characters informations, firstdeveloped a effective work platform UygurGIS1.0prototype system for Uyghurspatial information acquisition, storage, management, query and display,which withinnovation. It has important basic role for the application and development of Uyghurspatial information service and Uyghur cartographic compilation.
