In quantum optics and even optics, to explore the nature of light-matter interaction isa important area for research. The interaction between the coherent electromagnetic fieldand the multi-level atom can produce colorful, novelty and important quantum phenomenaand quantum coherent phenomena, as a typical case, the effect of electromagneticallyinduced transparency and the EIT medium because of its weak absorption coefficient, highdispersion coefficient, strong nonlinear effects and so on aroused more attention. Theresearch of the theories and experiments of the EIT has become a very active area ofresearch. This paper reviews the research history of the EIT, introduces the basic concepts ofthe EIT, describes our focus on theoretical and experimental study around the EIT:1) We describe the theoretical basis of researching EIT effect, which is thesemi-classical theory, and numerically simulate the factors of affecting the EIT linewidth.2) We show the experimental basis of researching EIT effect.3) We illustrate the experimental optical pathway diagram to observe the absorptionof EIT, and explain how to build a measure of dispersion of EIT, scilicet, Mach-Zehnderinterferometer. Finally, we give the experimental results. The innovative works are to scanpump light instead of scan probe beam so that eliminate the Doppler absorptionbackground, and get the symmetrical EIT absorption curve; from the dispersion point weprove the new explaination of the EIT effect of predecessors.4) We prove that in suitable conditions we may make the EIT theoretical expressionof the cold atoms to split into the sum of two parts. The innovative work is in experimentwe derive the absorption and dispersion curves of EIT of the thermal atoms can be fittedusing the form of two parts, the results are very good.
