Metamaterial is a kind of artificial electromagnetic material and has attracted more and moreattention due to their unique electromagnetic properties. In this thesis, we design and analyze somenew electromagnetic devices focusing on the application of metamaterial, including photonic crystalfilter, superlens and transform optics. The main contents can be stated as follows:1. By using the transfer matrix method, we investigate the optical transmission properties andapplications of one-dimensional photonic crystals containing a negative refractive index defect layer. We find that the structure has a good filtering character, where its defects modes are a narrowtransmission peak inside the band gap. The results show that the band-gap depends on the refractiveindex ratio of ordinary materials when the optical length of those layers remains unchanged. And thetransmission peak shifts quasi-periodical depending on the optical length of the defect layer, and theperiod is about half a central wavelength.2. We study a hyperlens with the multi-layered half-cylindrical structure, which can get thefar-field optical imaging beyond the diffraction limit at different wavelengths. The hyperlens consistsof two kinds of semiconductors whose dielectric permittivity depends on operating wavelength.Numerical simulation shows that this hyperlens can fulfill a far-field superlensing condition atmultiple different wavelengths. The wavelength range of this hyperlens can be controlled by choosingappropriate dielectrics, and each range can be fine tuned by thickness radio of the two dielectriclayers.3. We design a bidirectional collimating lens using the conformal mapping method. The lenshas the characteristics of simple structure with isotropic refractive index. It shows that conformalmapping is more superior compared to coordinate transformation in some transformation opticalregimes.
