Although China took up the industry of flowers and ornamental plants quite late, it has completed the course which took a century for the developed countries in 20 years. Up to now, an independent industry of flowers and plants has formed from nothing and weakness, and has become a new growth point in China's economy.Since 1984, flowers and ornamental plants have been listed as an industry. The growth area of flower and ornamental plants was only 8,000 ha in 1992, the output value was 30 million yuans. By the end of 2003, the growth area reached 430,000 ha, the sales value was 35.3 billion yuans, exportation earned 10 million US dollars. At present, there are 2,185 flower markets, 60,000 flower corporations, 950,000 flower-growing families, more than 2.93 million flower farmers and workers across China. However, there still exist many unsatisfactory points in comparison with the developed countries, many potentialities need tapping. In this paper, the domestic flower market in part of China is summarily surveys, the status and pattern of flower production, market requirement, flower research and circulation are analyzed, and the corresponding solutions are also provided. The main contents are below:1. Characteristics of flower production in China: development is rapid, production quality is improved, distribution is specialized, a circulation net is formed, research and education are developing, and there are more and more overseas exchanges and international flower activities2. The weakness in flower industry of China comparing with the developed countries: polarized production (i.e. most flower corporations crowded in the well-off places and areas where resources are rich), low productivity, loose market management, poor circulation means, disjointed research and production3. The corresponding solutions: to improve the whole national quality, spread scientific knowledge about flowers, strengthen the personnel training, improve research quality, strengthen the market management.4. Prediction: the international trade will be more active and the amount of import and export will increased enormously; the products will be developed toward high-tech, high-quality and multi-varieties; the competition will be concentrated on service quality in stead of price; the international cooperation will be more profound.
