The management of the network is divided into in-band management and out-of-band management. In in-band management, the management data share the same channel as the data being processed, and in out-of-band management, a separate channel is used for management data. In-band management is applied to manage the network when the network is available. Once the network is down, in-band management becomes useless. In such case, out-of-band management can be applied to maintain the network in order to recover the network fault. Local maintenance is the traditional out-of-band management approach with low efficiency and high cost. In order to overcome the lack of traditional out-of-band management, a set of out-of-band management devices including Intelligent Power Distribution Unit and Console Server are developed to simplify the out-of-band management and reduce the maintenance cost.The design and implementation of Intelligent Power Distribution Unit are introduced in this thesis. Intelligent Power Distribution Unit is an important component of out-of-band management devices for centralized management of the power supply of network devices. It has the following features:controlling the power supply of network devices, user authentication, command line interface, electric current measurement, overload alarm and firmware upgrade. It works together with the Console Server to manage the power supply of network devices when the in-band management fails to work, in order to recover the network from the outages caused by the crash of network devices.Firstly, the application background and practical meaning of the system are introduced. Then, the requirements of the system are analysed, and the key technologies are illustrated. Furthermore, the scheme and structure of each hardware and software modules are described in detail. Finally, system testing is presented, and the strengths and weaknesses of the system are concluded.
