China is a main steel producer, and its crude steel production ranked first in the world for thirteen consecutive years. In the steel production, continuous steel casting occupies an important position and directly affects the quality of steel. During continuous casting, the control of the molten steel liquid level needs high accuracy. The accuracy error of liquid level will lead mould powder and inclusion into molten steel. It will not only affect the quality of casting blank, and even serious production accidents, such as bleed-out and steel-overflow. Therefore, the development of liquid level detection system of continuous casting has become an important subject.This paper discusses a molten steel liquid level detection system based on the eddy current sensor. This system uses the weak signal of molten steel liquid level from the feedback of eddy current sensor. It first pre-amplifies the signal and transfers it into a voltage of 0~5V, analyzes and processes the voltage signal by ATmega128 microchip of the signal converter, then linearizes and has cast-on automatic compensation function, finally transfers the voltage signal into standard 4~20mA current signal through D/A and outputs into IPC (Industrial Personal Computer), and the IPC will control the final cast-on and cast-off operation.This paper first introduces the research background and development status of liquid level detection technology in the continuous casting, propose an appropriate liquid level detection system in continuous casting production with a basis of eddy current detection method. Next, it described in detail the hardware designs of various parts of signal conversion board, and the related functions of each module implementation are described. Then it describes the related software program designs of signal conversion board. It describes the program development environment and related setting methods of softwares, explains in detail implementation of subprograms and program operating process, explains debugging process of signal conversion board system, and gives final operating result and actual operation effect pictures.At the end, combined with the design experience and process of this system, this essay points out the limitations and deficiencies of the system and gives a prospect for the following study.
