Since traveling wave tubes have so many characters such as high power output, wide frequency bandwidth, wide dynamic range, high gain, etc, they are used in various types of electronic devices, for example, radar, communication, broadcast, remote sensing and electronic counterwork. As a new technology, multi-beam TWT is developed from single-beam TWT. It has many transmission channels in which the electromagnetic wave and electron beams interact. The efficiency of each beam-wave interaction is high, so as the efficiency of the whole tube. The multi-beam technology can cut down the working voltage, and achieve the same power of single beam under a lower voltage.The multi-beam technology has kept the advantage of coupled-cavity TWT, and reduced the size and weight of the tube, cut down the working voltage, and achieved a wider bandwidth and a higher efficiency. Researching this new structure TWT is important for us to improve a kind of TWT which has a wide bandwidth and high efficiency, small size as well as a low working voltage.In this paper, the multi-beam coupled-cavity slow-wave structure was studied, and the researches were mainly focus on the following aspects:(1) The multi-beam coupled-cavity slow-wave structure was studied and introduced.(2) The cold test characteristics including the dispersion and interaction impedance of multi-beam coupled-cavity slow-wave structure were studied, and the principle and the measurement method of cold-test characteristics were introduced.(3) The beam-wave interaction of the multi-beam coupled-cavity slow-wave structure was studied, and the output electric field, beam-wave interaction were also simulated by particle-in-cell method. The uniformity in the interaction of different beams was calculated, the position of the beams will affect the output electric fields, and the middle beam will also affect the output.(4) The three-dimensional software for the designing of multi-beam traveling wave tube was developed. The method, process, key issues, as well as the interfaces of the software were introduced in the paper.As a new type of high power microwave vacuum device, the technique of multi-beam TWT is immature. The slow-wave system of multi-beam TWT was studied in the paper, and the results show that the multi-beam TWT is a novel promising vacuum tube with high power. The studies in the paper can provide guidance to the design and test of multi-beam TWT.
