High Dynamic Range Imaging(HDRI) Technology has enjoyed wide application in recent years, such as industrial image processing, machine vision and 3D entertainment. In high dynamic range images, the radiance of original image is far larger than that of displaying device. As an image enhancing technology, HDRI has incomparable advantages in global illumination, virtual reality etc. In previous researches, researchers from home and abroad have proposed many relevant HDR imaging technologies, which mainly include hardware improvement and soft composition algorithms. Because of the high cost, advanced imaging hardwares are only applied in some critical situations, but not suitable for large-scale application. However, on the other hand, software algorithms have advantages of good performance, easy operation and low cost, thus arouse wide concern.In this paper, we mainly study the relevant technologies used in HDR imaging and display, including camera response function recovery, fusion of multi-exposure images, HDR image storage format, HDR image display, and the image registration for the multi-exposure images. Our research comes from the cooperated research project with Omron Corporation(Japan). As the core topic of the project, image registration for multi-exposure images is given very detailed discussion and experiment analysis. We discussed the commonly used the mean threshold bitmap(MTB) algorithm, SIFT-based image registration, Fourier transform registration and a new SURF-based image registration algorithm. Other major algorithms are also given corresponding experiment analysis and demonstration.
