In this dissertation, we mainly focus on the Kai-style calligraphic beautification method for online handwriting Chinese character. This is a technique that can beautify user's handwriting characters written by dragging the mouse or scratched on the touch screen, touch panel, etc. and turn them into Kai-style font. It makes the user's input character more beautiful so that can improve the user's experience. We give definition to'handwriting beautification'and point out its study area. Then we summarize the progress of the studies in this area. We find out that few application and prototypes can be found. Most of the existing techniques are quite simple and crude that the beautification result is not satisfactory. Some other techniques are quite complicated which limited its application. We propose a novel method to beautify user's input based on summarizing the structural and stylish features of Chinese character. Its fundamental concept includes'stroke segment'and'joint'which compose the entire stroke. We conclude three types of stroke segment and nine types of joint, and then model these stroke segments and joints using Bezier curve. Two methods are proposed, one is skeleton-based method and the other one is contour-based. Details of these two methods are described and experimental results are given to demonstrate their effectiveness. Besides, we compare our method and the other methods proposed by the some scholars to show the pros & cons of them respectively. We also mention the application of the beautification methods. It can be applied in the user interface to beautify the user's input. Besides, it can be applied in many areas such as Computer Aided Language Learning (CALL), Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Graphics processing (CG), personal font generation, etc. So, it's an interesting and interactive technique. We are looking forward it being widely used in variety input devices.
