With the spreading development of the Internet, especially with the popularity of the home network access, new network services are increased quickly. Network has been deep into every aspect of people's lives. But due to the limit of economy and technology development, the bandwith of home network can no longer meet the emerged services' requirement, and the most of network bandwith is occupied by some low-priority services, for example, P2P downloading. It seriously reduces the quality of important services and makes the home network work inefficiently.In order to use the limited network resources efficiently, and improve the home network service quality, we deeply studied the two major modules of the Linux kernel:Netfilter and TC, combined those two modules by designing kernel and user-space program, then implemented a intelligent home gateway with service-sense and rate-control functions. The intelligent home gateway system based on embedded Linux architecture, used Linxu2.4.20 as software platform, and its hardware platform based on BCM5453 routing platform with MIPS architecture, focused on improving the quality of home networks.The whole intelligent home gateway consists of four modules:user bandwith management module, traffic differentiating module, service sense module and rate control module. The user bandwith management module allocates bandwith to users according to management strategy. The service sense module distinguishes and marks network packets based on network protocol analysis and deep packet inspection. Then the traffic differentiating module differentiates the data flow according to the marker and the service's priority. Finally, the last module provides a rate control strategy for different network services and meets their QoS requirement. By means of the test to the above design, the modules implemented in the paper are able to fulfill the functions of the intelligent home getway. So the design proposed in this paper is verfied to be a workable design method.
