Due to the unique properties of flexible self-configuration and open access, mobile ad hoc networks win a bright prospective in the application of business use, military scenario and emergency environment where a fixed infrastructure is not available, thus, receiving numerous attention from both industry and research field. Though independent devices in mobile ad hoc networks are limited severely on capabilities, service composition is able to integrate resources of the whole network, providing complex and advanced services for network users. In this paper, we investigate the existing work on service composition in mobile ad hoc networks, and then propose our own framework. This framework contains service description, service discovery, service selection, service execution and service recovery. Among this modules, Service discovery finds the according service providers in networks, while service selection chooses one provider as service execution node in order to improve the quality of service execution. We propose a reliable service discovery and selection approach and experiment result shows our approach exceeds existing work not only on service performance but also network performance. For service execution, we present a new distribute execution mode, which is more suitable for mobile ad hoc networks than existing execution mode. Based on this mode, we propose two execution path construction algorithms:path detection and location based. Meantime, we study the technologies for composited service recovery and compare them in simulation environment.Based on these modules, we design a new special framework:dynamic service composition for mobile ad hoc network, which is suitable for small network with high mobility. This framework includes dynamic service discovery, selection, execution and recovery. Finally, we conclude this paper, and propose some research directions about this area in the future.
