H.264/AVC standard is the latest video coding standard formulated by the joint expert group composed by the moving picture experts group (MPEG) of the ISO/IEC and the video coding experts group (VCEG) of the ITU. H.264 standard introduces a number of advanced video coding techniques and ideas, so that it has a higher coding efficiency, a better compression and network-friendly. However, the high coding efficiency of the H.264 is coming with high computational complexity. The coding complexity of the H.264 is about 10 times more than the MPEG-4, which limits the application of the H.264 standard in the field of the real time. Therefore, it is essential to reduce the computational complexity and enhance the coding efficiency according to optimizing the algorithm while keeping the video quality in the application.First, this paper provides a brief overview of the fundamental technology of the video encoding and the development process of two series of digital video coding standard named H.26X and MPEG-X and the current research both at home and abroad. And then the structure of the codec and the main features of the H.264 encoding standard are described. Finally, analyzing the encoder performance and algorithm complexity of the H.264 and doing research deeply on the intra prediction technology of the H.264 standard.Finally, this paper proposed a intra prediction algorithm of H.264 based on the characteristic of image power spectral on the basis of analyzing the current intra prediction algorithm for detail, which can set the most likely prediction model as the final prediction model according to the statistical characteristics of the energy spectrum of the image. The proposed algorithm can abort the selecting process of prediction model early and reduce the complexity and improve the code speed. This paper uses the verification software of the H.264 named JM 13.2 as the experimental foundation. Then providing a comparison of the performance for the full search algorithm and the proposed algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can increase coding efficiency dramatically while keeping a good image quality and encoding rate.
