With the progressing of computer vision technology, license plate recognition (LPR) system was wide used in daily life. An embedded license plate recognition system based on DSP was designed in the paper and was used in the Vehicle Blacklist Searching System, by comparing the vehicle license plate with the blacklist which are in the data-base, then reaching the aim of automatic checking. Embedded DSP LPR system has advantages in weight and environmental requirement, comparing with the PC-based license plate recognition system, it make our useness more convenient.This paper has made researches focus on the license plate recognition system and its realization on DSP, An integrated LPR system was presented in this paper, including four parts Image Acquisition, Location and Division of the License Plate, Character Segmentation and Character Recognition. Each part has introduced the principle and algorithm. An approach for character recognition of vehicles license plates is proposed which is based on the improved template matching algorithm, Obtained the expected results. Then the paper has actualized the license plate recognition system on TMS320DM642, finally introduced the optimizations the LPR software to improve the system speed.This paper gives a brief description about the strong sides and the weak sides of system, and we expert some future work in our research in the end.
