The counting question of steel in sells and management, has been one important and complex tedious work. The traditional steel counting can only carry on by artificial. The work load is big, which is easy to make a mistake, and the efficiency is low. Therefore, the research request of a set of steel automatic tally system's is getting more and more urgent. It has the important meaning to solve the counting difficult problem, enhance working efficiency and promote economic growth.Because the digital image processing technology has the non-contact, the processing nimble. In order to solve the problem of steel automatic counting, this article will introduce one counting method that the ellipse fitting algorithm based on Least Square method with this technology base. First gather steel image from the camera or the digital camera. Then carry on gradation processing, image Smoothing, edge Detection, threshold segmentation, image thinning and so on using the digital image processing technology. Finally carry on the fitting counting to the steel section's ellipse parameter through the least square method.1. The common theories and methods of digital image processing are discussed in this paper. The image preprocessing methods, just like gradation processing, image Smoothing, edge Detection, threshold segmentation, image thinning are compared and analyzed. At last, the preprocessing methods and of steel automatic counting system are confirmed.2. Proposed to one kind steel automatic counting method based on the digital image processing. Through Least Square ellipse fitting algorithm to determine the ecliptic's geometric parameter formed by steel cross-section. Then realizes steel's automatic counting. Determine the corresponding relationships between fitting ellipse and the steel cross-section through elliptic's geometric parameter from by Least Square ellipse fitting algorithm.3. Has developed digital image processing and the steel automatic counting software by the VC++ software platform. It can confirm each the algorithm step of imagery processing, also realize steel's automatic counting fast.
