Wireless sensor networks combine sensing technology, embedded computing technology, modern network technology, wireless communication technology, distributed intelligent information processing technology, which when compared with traditional sensors, with a small volume, low-cost, low power consumption characteristics. This feature of wireless sensor networks make it in real-time data-aware, target tracking, and environmental areas such as data collection has a wide range of applications. Among them, coverage and tracking problem in wireless sensor networks research fundamental problems and key issue.For the wireless sensor network coverage problem, based on self-organizing virtual force coverage algorithm is proposed in this paper, for the sensor node which randomly distributed in an area to be monitored. The algorithm assumes that sensor nodes in the presence of virtual forces between sensor nodes. And thus based on a virtual force, the sensor nodes can get a number of distance thresholds between them by analyzing and calculating. The distance threshold value is the key to the whole algorithm. The simulation results show that the algorithm can effectively cover the region to be monitored, better performance.For target tracking is one of the main applications in wireless sensor networks. First of all, the paper assumes that all nodes within the region are moved to the position, which guided by the coverage algorithm to cover the region maximum. That is all nodes'position has been known. In this paper proposed cluster-based architecture for target tracking algorithm based on the assumption. The cluster structure is constructed between the nodes; the nodes can pass through the target state information by the cluster structure. As for the target's track prediction, this paper uses the particle filter tracking algorithm. The simulation results show that the algorithm can accurately track the moving target which moves into the monitoring of region.For wireless sensor networks coverage algorithm and tracking algorithm, we need exchange of information between nodes, so the algorithms must have an efficient communication protocol to support. And a good communication protocol can make algorithms more efficient. This paper designed a cluster-based communication protocol on sensor nodes. The protocol sends identification information periodically to build cluster structure in sensor network. The protocol can reduce the load of the communication network. In the communication system experiment shows that the protocol can effectively cluster building and restructuring, which have good practical.
