As an application of the acoustic technology in the area of deep-sea salvage and channel survey, the research of a real-time 3D modeling and display of sonar data has great prospects for engineering applications and research value. In this dissertation, a VTK based software system which can complete the 3D modeling of submarine sonar data and display in real time, is studied and then designed for these requirements. Firstly, the whole system design is described. Secondly, the design of each module in the system is introduced. Thirdly, the visualization algorithm of 3D modeling including reconstruction, registration, and mosaicing is studied. Lastly, the test solution, test procedure, and all test results for the whole system are presented.Chapter 1 introduces the significance of this dissertation, the current status of the technology correlating with 3D modeling of sonar data, a description about the significance of this research work, and main contents of this dissertation.Chapter 2 introduces the basic components, the main functions, and the key technology of VTK in graphics development.Chapter 3 describes the functions of the system, the whole system's framework, and all the modules of this system. The Synchronization and communication of each thread are also discussed.Chapter 4 discusses about the design and implementation of all modules, especially the visualization module.Chapter 5 discusses about the visualization algorithm of reconstruction, registration, and mosaicing.Chapter 6 shows the test results of the whole system including the method of creating simulated data, test procedure, and test results.Chapter 7 draws a conclusion of the whole dissertation. The prospect of further research work is also given.
