The quality inspection of tobacco leaf is one of the key parts of the tobacco leaf production. For a long time, leaf quality depends on the observations of the artificial under the mechanical operation, so it's greatly influenced by human factors, and can not meet the requirements of automation. In this paper, we studied the static parameters of tobacco, including the observation and measurement of the size of tobacco leaf, the area of tobacco leaf, and the stems and color parameters and so on. Among this the proportion of the size of tobacco leaf and the stem length is identified as an important parameter of the production line of tobacco leaf. The research work has the following aspects:1. Based on the requirements of the tobacco static parameters measurement, the establishing a more complete experimental platform to provide leaf size, area, stem and color of tobacco, and the observation and measurement of the ratio of tobacco leaf size and the length of stem and other parameters.2. For the image background roughness phenomenon, establishing a quasi-linear calibration model, through twice static experiments to get the correct coefficient. And simplify the linear correction method by the use of look-up table values, thus improve the flatness of the background effectively.3. Analyzing the selection of binarization threshold of color materials, giving a separate method based on materials characteristics library, at the same time investigating the relevant metrics of building a database. This method can effectively improve the recognition accuracy and the running speed.The smoke static parameters measuring device has been an ancillary equipment of the smart smoke positioning System. In the Hongta Tobacco Group of Yuxi Cigarette Factory in Yunnan it has already been used in the redrying production line. Further study will help to increase the analysis levels of the quality of tobacco, it provide the basis for automation for the tobacco processing industry.
