In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the metrics of throughput and fairness are often ignored whereas more and more application scenarios need higher transmission rate as Internet of Things and WSNs are applied in more and more complex environments. Nevertheless the current sensor node features of low-cost, low-power and low-computational-capacity restrict the transmission rate from the view of sensor device, and the technologies like MIMO, multiple access, and adaptive channel allocation are not suitable for WSNs, therefore it is hard to improve WSN throughput and fairness merely depend on the hard-ware restraints of current wireless sensor nodes. However presently we notice many application scenarios deployed of wireless sensor networks can be used of limited infrastructure, in the forms of wireline, which results in a large improvement of performance in network throughput and fairness. And inspired by the uniqueness of such application scenarios, we proposed hybrid sensor networks (HSNs) for improving both network throughput and fairness by deploying wireline into WSNs.For the hybrid sensor network that aims to maximize both network throughput and fairness, there are two key problems crucial to be studied, which are how to deploy wirelines into WSN and how to assign throughput to each node afterwards respectively. In this thesis, we firstly investigate and present an optimal throughput allocation mechanism for a fixed network, and then propose three heuristic algorithms for dynamically deploying wirelines into WSN. Our following extensive simulations demonstrate that hybrid algorithm achieve up to 60%improvement on network throughput over greedy algorithm and up to 40% improvement on network fairness over Kincrement clustering algorithm while the sink is positioned at the network center. However the perfomence of greedy algorithm deteriorates most while the sink is positioned at the network corner.
