As an important branch of spread spectrum communication, frequency hopping(FH) communication has been widely used in the military and civil communications, since its advantages such as anti-jamming, anti-fade and high security. Synchronization is one key technology of FH system, its quality will directly affect the merits of system performance. The synchronization procedure is commonly of coarse acquisition and fine tracking. This thesis focus on the fine tracking performance and associated bit-error-rate(BER) of an FH system on multipath Rayleigh fading channel.Firstly, the significance of this topic and the research status of FH technology are introduced. Then the basic principle and the key technologies of FH communication system are outlined, especially, the synchronization of FH system is detailed introduced. Later, based on the theory of Hong Zhao et al., it verifies that the mean and variance cures of the estimated timing error for multipath Rayeigh fading channel are closer to that for an ideal case than that for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Therefore it concludes that the performance of tracking is improved owing to multipath diversity.Secondly, the simulation platforms for synchronization tracking of FH system on multipath Rayleigh fading channel is set up by using MATLAB7.0/SIMULINK as simulation tools, and a lot of experiments are carried out based on the platforms. The simulation results show that the performance of synchronization tracking is sure improved by multipath fading. Finally, the platform for FH system with imperfect tracking over multipath Rayleigh fading channel is simulated. The results have shown that BER performance with imperfect tracking in multipath Rayleigh fading channel degrades in comparison with AWGN channel, but improved compared to single-path Rayleigh fading channel.
