Face recognition as a biometric technology provides lots of information, and it has become a very active field of pattern recognition. Feature extraction is a very important problem of face recognition and affects the performance of the whole system, in which sub-space analysis is a relatively hot method in current study. From the aspect of the most impressive features in subspace analysis, and for the more information that the color face can provide, the paper studied the quaternion-based color face recognition. The main work and contributions are as follows:1. The use of PCA for the recognition of color image leads the bad classification result because that it can't maintain the non-linear information of pattern.So a graph-based method of Information Preserving Projection(IPP) was proposed. This method uses adjacency graph to describe the differences in color image information, and gives the diversity scatter.The projection direction was obtained by maximizing the diversity scatter. Color face recognition was realized with quaternion. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed method.2. The two-Dimensional Information Preserving Projection (2DIPP) and quaternion based method of Color Face Recognition was proposed.The method directly estimated the diversity scatter of color images from the image matrix using two-dimensional feature extraction.It effectively maintains the spatial structural information between the image pixel, and also well reduces the impact of small sample size problem and the computational complexity.The experimental results confirm the validity and reasonableness of the approach.3. For the two-dimensional feature extraction can not well use the structural information of the image pixel between the adjacent rows or columns, it leads to redundancy.The paper raised two-Dimensional Information of direction Preserving Projection.The method extracted the directional diagram reflecting the adjacent rows or columns from the color image and then calculated the diversity scatter of color images using the directional diagram.The paper realizes color face recognition combined with quaternion.The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
