With the deve1opment of modern techno1ogy, infrared image has been widely used in the military and civilian fields, and has shown a large potential market and a bright future. Because of the influence of the poor quality of infrared image devices and working environment, the result of infrared image is not as good as expected. Thus, it is very necessary to enhance the infrared image.Of all the numerous data processing methods, Rough Set Theory is a solution that can play a large role in image processing. As a soft computing method, the Rough Set Theory affords not only new logic of science and research method for information science and cognitive science, but also efficient process technique for Intelligent Information Processing.The Rough Set Theory is introduced into the enhancement of infrared image. Also the tentative exploration of the application of the Rough Set Theory has been made in image processing. Based on the Rough Set Theory, the image data is simplified and classified into targets and backgrounds with the combination of the OTSU method. By enhancing the targets and backgrounds respectively the result image after combining is obtained. Then, the enhancement results of the infrared image were given and the experiment results have proved the method practical. The future research work has been also indicated at the end of the paper.
