Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is a novel technology about acquiring and processing information and can be used to transfer information to the terminal users. It demonstrates comprehensive application prospect in many fields, such as military, medicine, space exploration, industry, civilian and home networks. Therefore, wireless sensor network is one of the most advanced technology in twenty-first century and gains a lot of concerns all over the world.Firstly, the basal concept and characteristic of wireless sensor network is introduced. The process of studying wireless sensor network and the pivotal technology in wireless sensor are reviewed in this paper. The wireless network performance optimization is discussed through network architecture and the function of each layer in wireless sensor network, and then we introduced the mind of cross-layer designing. For the fact that the coupling of each layer in wireless sensor network is more and more tightness, so it is necessary to share the network resource and information for data transmission, it can optimize the network performance and alleviate congestion better than before. This paper specifically studies the congestion control polices. On the basis of analysis some representative congestion control algorithm in wireless sensor network, a new congestion control algorithm called HCCC (hop-by-hop cross-layer congestion control) is presented. This HCCC congestion control scheme based on contention MAC protocol is preliminary attempt for cross-layer congestion control in wireless sensor network. HCCC adaptively adjusts channel access priorities in MAC layer based on open loop hop-by-hop rate control according to detecting buffer occupancy ratio and congestion degree of local nodes. This algorithm can adaptively adjust the information sending rate according to local congestion condition of network nodes. NS-2 simulation results show that our algorithm show high superiority on data package loss rate, network fairness, throughput and energy efficiency and improve network performance and congestion control efficiency.
