Image registration is a hot spot of many research fields such as computer vision, patern recognition, medical image analysis and remote sensing image processing and so forth. On the basis of analysis and study on the technical difficulty of multi-source satellite image registration, it takes RADARSAT-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar image and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper optics satellite image as research objectives and does researches on the technology of multi-sensor satellite image registration.This thesis makes a deep study on international popular edge detection method, and then put forwards a new method of Canny edge detecting operator integrated with wavelet transformation. Thus SAR images can get more precise edge information through edge detection from different directions. And it takes region growth method to reach the detection of closed region, and realize closed region match with keeping pixels and semi-major axis of closed region as features of match. Meanwhile it takes closed region center of gravity as the cognominal points to realize TM image and SAR image registration. It adopts Spectro-photometric Method to realize TM image water body detection. According to relations of corresponding locations of matching SAR image and TM image, it confirms SAR image water body area and makes water body in SAR image separate from shadow.It uses Matlab to do an experiment for SAR and TM images which are from southeastern china. In addition, it analyzes and compared the results of experiment. The results are found that image registration based on closed region can make SAR and TM image match precisely. And adopting ENVI software to realize water body detection of TM image use Spectro-photo metric Method and then realizes SAR image water body detection .
