In recent years, three-line array cameras have been widely used in satellite photography. On the one hand, the data of the images shaped by a three-line array camera is as three times that of the images shaped by a single-line array camera with the same resolution. To improve the storage and transmission efficiency of the three-line array images, we must adopt a more efficient image compression method. On the other hand, compared to single array images, the three views of the images shaped by a three-line array camera not only have a strong correlation, but also have a quite difference in the complexity. Therefore, recently, the effective and real-time stereo image compression technologies have become research hotspots and difficulties. This paper studies a specific method for three-line array image compression coding using mixed bit-rate allocation algorithm, and achieves its efficient compression software system. An introduction to the imaging principles and characteristics of stereo images is first given. Then the suitable wavelet basis for the compression of high-resolution stereo images and several commonly used compression algorithms are discussed. Based on the above analysises and the characteristics that the complexity of the three views of a stereo image is quite different, a mixed bit-rate allocation compression method based on SPIHT is proposed. By comparing the PSNR and subjective image quality of the image reconstructed by the proposed method and the separate compression algorithm based on SPIHT, this proposed algorithm not only achieves better performance than the separate compression algorithm in a whole, but also could meet the real-time requirement for onboard compression. So our proposed method mixed bit-rate allocation based on SPIHT is more suitable for high-resolution stereo images of real-time compression and transmission.
