Relay communication is a hot research topic with more and more attention paid by academic and industry fields in the 4th generation mobile communication systems. It has the advantages of extending the coverage of cells and saving transmission energy. In addition, transmit antennas at mobile terminal and relay node and receive antennas array can form a virtual MIMO(Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) system, therefore providing spatial diversity and increasing the robustness of communication systems. Also mentioned is that relay communication has lower spectrum efficiency. On the other hand, network coding can provide additional diversity gain without sacrificing spectrum efficiency. Therefore, how to introduce network coding idea in wireless relay communication system is an important job with high research value. Two joint network and channel coding design schemes in wireless multiple-access relay systems are studied. Main components are as follows: 1) Two specified joint design schemes for relay communication are given with network coding implementation in the physic layer based on code superposition and signal superposition respectively; 2) Joint detection and decoding methods with iterative idea at the destination node are realized respectively for two proposed schemes. They correspond to joint network and channel decoding. 3) Simulation and performance analysis are given. Simulation results show that scheme based on signal superposition with iterative method is better than that based on code superposition. Finally, the whole work is summarized and also research outlook for future work is carried out.
